Railbookers’ Nick Lim explains how integrated rail vacations, technology, and rising luxury demand are reshaping global travel, particularly among Asia-Pacific travellers.

Travel Daily Media (TDM): Railbookers is often described as a “one-stop shop” for global rail. How would you define this positioning in operational terms, and what differentiates your model from traditional rail ticketing platforms?

Nick Lim (NL): At Railbookers, we manage more than just train bookings; we also handle hotels, sightseeing, transfers, and much more. This means we are well-versed in the best travel times and optimal seat selections, and we handle seat reservations. Additionally, we combine these services with top-quality hotels and sightseeing options, streamlining the booking process into one simple phone call. We operate globally, offering both national and luxury rail products, each with its own ticketing systems, policies, and booking windows. By offering multi-country rail trips that can be booked up to 24 months in advance, we ensure agents have a single point of contact throughout the trip, eliminating the need to coordinate with multiple vendors. Moreover, in the event of disruptions such as rail strikes or engineering work, we proactively adjust guests’ itineraries and present alternative options as needed, relieving travel agents of that responsibility.

TDM: How does technology enable Railbookers to manage inventory, dynamic pricing, and cross-border coordination at scale?

NL: Our system can handle pricing and booking up to two years in advance. It integrates with various providers, each with different booking windows, making it easy for travel agents to plan trips from last-minute arrangements to two-year-ahead bookings.

TDM: In an era where travellers can book components independently online, what is the core value proposition of curated rail journeys?

NL: Everything is integrated into one platform. Why invest extra time and resources in researching and making multiple bookings with separate providers, like accommodation, rail companies, and day tours, when you can do it all at once and achieve the same results, allowing customers to enjoy their holidays? As specialists in rail holidays, we can help create a smooth experience that includes all aspects, from luxury rail trips to multi-generational family vacations. Our 24/7 global hotline also offers reassurance to travellers and agents in the event of unexpected disruptions.

TDM: What booking trends are you currently observing from Asia-Pacific travellers — in terms of trip duration, destinations, and spend?

NL: The strong interest and enthusiasm for rail travel among Asia-Pacific travellers is exactly why we launched here, and we are thrilled by the warm welcome we’ve received. Travellers prefer experiences where they can fully enjoy the journey itself as part of the destination. They seek greater flexibility in planning their holidays, and train travel provides that. Additionally, we are noticing an increasing demand for luxury rail holidays throughout the region.

Travel Daily MediaTDM: Which key source markets in Asia are driving growth, and how are their travel behaviours different from Western markets?

NL: At this stage, we expect the traditional FIT markets of Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, and Malaysia to take the lead. Afterwards, we anticipate China, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand to join the fold. The opportunities here are significant as markets across Asia mature. From a cultural perspective, Asian travellers still predominantly prefer to travel in small groups compared to Western markets. Bookings are also generally made within shorter windows of 3-6 months prior to departure.

TDM: How are affluent travellers redefining “luxury” in the context of rail — is it about exclusivity, sustainability, storytelling, or something else?

NL: The luxury market from Asia has expanded considerably since the pandemic ended. This segment values the finer aspects of travel and continually seeks new experiences to satisfy their wanderlust. Luxury rail journeys provide this, often featuring rich history, glamour, exclusivity, and a touch of sophistication. Additionally, there is a romantic allure to luxury trains, famously depicted in Hollywood movies like James Bond.

TDM: With sustainability becoming a higher priority, how does European rail align with ESG-conscious travel decisions?

NL: Rail is one of the most sustainable ways to travel, and for travellers who make it a key part of their holiday, Europe is ideal. Train stations are commonly located in city centres, making it easy to walk or use public transport to reach most hotels and other destinations.

TDM: Where do you see the greatest untapped potential for global rail tourism from Asia-Pacific travellers?

NL: It’s essential to focus on destinations that offer excellent sightseeing and rail infrastructure, such as the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Japan, among others. Therefore, the greatest opportunity now lies in education, particularly within the trade circle in Asia. There simply isn’t enough information on how rail systems operate in other countries and how they can deliver or enhance a destination’s unique experience.
